In central OH, southwest of Canton; organized Jan 31, 1810 from Muskingum County. Name Origin: From Delaware Indian goschachgunk, thought to mean 'union of waters,' referring to the confluence of the Tuscarawas and Muskingum rivers; 'crossing' or 'ford,' or 'black bear town.'

Area (sq mi): 567.58 (land 564.07; water 3.51). Pop per sq mi: 65.50.
Pop 2005: 36,945. State rank: 67. Pop change: 2000-20005 0.80%; 1990-2000 3.50%. Pop 2000: 36,655 (White 97.00%; Black or African American 1.10%; Hispanic or Latino 0.60%; Asian 0.30%; Other 1.20%). Foreign born: 1.00%. Median age: 37.80.
Income 2000: per capita $16,364; median household $34,701; Pop below poverty level: 9.10%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $23,203-$23,193.
