Cosmic Background Explorer: see infrared astronomy infrared astronomy, study of celestial objects by means of the infrared radiation they emit, in the wavelength range from about 1 micrometer to about 1 millimeter. All objects, from trees and buildings on the earth to distant galaxies, emit infrared (IR) radiation. ..... Click the link for more information. . Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE)U.S. satellite that from 1989 to 1993 mapped the cosmic background radiation field. In 1964, microwave radiation was discovered that permeated the cosmos uniformly. This radiation provided spectacular support for the big bang theory, which held that the early universe was very hot. In order to test theories of the universe's history, cosmologists needed to know whether the field was truly the same in every direction. COBE's all-sky survey of the radiation showed slight “wrinkles” from density variations. These variations would have stimulated galaxy formation. A spectrometer showed that the background radiation's spectrum precisely matched the theory. How to thank TFD for its existence? After operating for five months, two instruments aboard the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) spacecraft have completed maps showing the distribution of microwave and 9 a satellite called the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) will search for whatever faint glimmer remains from the birth of the universe. A payload originally planned to have been launched by the shuttle but now assigned to an ELV will be the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE), an earth-orbiting satellite designed to map the pattern of emissions remaining as evidence of the Big Bang at the birth of the universe. |
