cardinal number
The number that states how much or how many. In "record 43 has 7 fields," the 7 is cardinal. See cardinality. Contrast with ordinal number.

a. a measure of the size of a set that does not take account of the order of its members
b. a particular number having this function

The number of members of a set; usually taken as a particular well-ordered set representative of the class of all sets which are in one-to-one correspondence with one another.
