Counts, George S. (Sylvester) (1889–1974) educator; born in Baldwin City, Kans. A professor at Teachers College, Columbia University (1927–56), Counts was also a government advisor and an impassioned critic of American schools, whose primary function, he argued, should be to promote democratic values.
