Counts, George Sylvester, 1889–1974, American educator, b. near Baldwin City, Kans., grad. Baker Univ., 1911, Ph.D. Univ. of Chicago, 1916. He taught in the educational departments of several universities before joining the faculty of Teachers College, Columbia Univ., in 1927. A strong advocate of teachers' unions, he was president (1939–42) of the American Federation of Teachers American Federation of Teachers (AFT), an affiliate of the AFL-CIO. It was formed (1916) out of the belief that the organizing of teachers should follow the model of a labor union, rather than that of a professional association. .....
