Comtat Venaissin (kəNtä` vənäsăN`) or Comtat, region of SE France, Vaucluse dept., comprising the territory around Avignon Avignon , city (1990 pop. 86,440), capital of Vaucluse dept., SE France, on the Rhône River. It is a farm market with a wine trade and a great variety of manufactures.
..... Click the link for more information. . Well-irrigated, it is a truck-farming and fruit-growing area. Comtat Venaissin was given by King Philip III to Pope Gregory X in 1274. Succeeding French kings sought to regain the region, but it remained in papal hands until 1791, when a plebiscite was held and the inhabitants voted to reunite with France. The region's historic capital was Carpentras Carpentras , town (1990 pop. 25,477), Vaucluse dept., SE France, in Provence. It is an important farm market and a small industrial center.
