In southwestern WA, north of Portland, OR; organized Apr 21, 1854 (prior to statehood) from Lewis County. Name Origin: For the Cowlitz River, which flows through the county; from an Indian tribal name; meaning uncertain but possibly 'river of shifting sand.'

Area (sq mi): 1166.33 (land 1138.64; water 27.69). Pop per sq mi: 85.50.
Pop 2005: 97,325. State rank: 12. Pop change: 2000-20005 4.70%; 1990-2000 13.20%. Pop 2000: 92,948 (White 89.90%; Black or African American 0.50%; Hispanic or Latino 4.60%; Asian 1.30%; Other 6.30%). Foreign born: 3.70%. Median age: 36.90.
Income 2000: per capita $18,583; median household $39,797; Pop below poverty level: 14.00%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $23,665-$25,039.
Unemployment 2004: 8.50%. Change from 2000: -2.50%. Median travel time to work: 21.30 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 14.40%.
