Cowper, Edward Alfred
Born Dec. 10, 1819; died May 9, 1893. British engineer and inventor. Beginning in 1834, Cowper was a mechanic’s apprentice inLondon. From 1846 he worked in Birmingham. In 1857 heinvented an air-heating device for blast furnaces that was namedthe Cowper stove. He also designed and patented a steam com-pound generator (1857), a wheel with steel spokes and rubbertires (1868), and a printing electromagnetic telegraph (1879).Cowper was a member of the Iron and Steel Institute (GreatBritain).
