Craddock, Charles Egbert, pseud. of Mary Noailles Murfree (nō-ī`), 1850–1922, American novelist, b. near Murfreesboro, Tenn. She wrote her best works about the mountain people of Tennessee, most notably The Prophet of the Great Smoky Mountains (1885). Her novels combined romantic descriptions of landscape with realistic rendering of local dialect. She also wrote a series of Southern historical novels, including Where the Battle Was Fought (1884).
