Craig, Malin (1875–1945) soldier; born in St. Joseph, Mo. Son of a career cavalry officer and a 1898 West Point graduate, this hardworking, colorless officer carried out an extensive modernization as army chief of staff in the late 1930s. At his direction, the army upgraded mobilization plans, updated armored equipment and doctrine, and improved communications.
