Crane, Walking

a machine for lifting and horizontally displacing weights, which moves along a single-rail ground track. A two- or four-axle cart of the walking crane is fixed with a post that holds a rotating jib. The lateral stability of the walking crane is provided by the collar rims of the traveling wheels and the upper pulleys on vertical axes, which roll between two ceiling support beams. When its jib is turned in the direction of motion, the walking crane takes up little space; it serves an area as wide as the sweep of the jib on both sides of the track. A walking crane can lift up to 10 tons, and the sweep of the jib is 3-7 m; the machine is powered by electricity. The walking crane is used to mechanize hoisting and loading and unloading work in production shops and enclosed warehouses.
