Cranston, Alan (MacGregor) (1914– ) U.S. senator; born in Palo Alto, Calif. Elected to the U.S. Senate (Dem., Cal.; 1968–92), he ran unsuccessfully for the presidential nomination in 1984. He supported disarmament and liberal domestic policies.
