In central eastern NC, northeast of Jacksonville; organized Dec 3, 1705 (prior to statehood) as Archdale Precinct of Bath District, although there is evidence that an Archdale County had existed since 1696. Name changed 1712. Name Origin: Probably for William (1668-1711), 2nd Earl of Craven, who died the year before the name changed. Others claim the 1st Earl (1606-97), an original lord proprietor of Carolina, or the 3rd Earl, one of the proprietors when the name was changed. Originally named for John Archdale (1642?-1717), a lord proprietor and governor of Carolina (1694-96).

Area (sq mi): 774.14 (land 708.43; water 65.72). Pop per sq mi: 128.20.
Pop 2005: 90,795. State rank: 29. Pop change: 2000-20005 -0.70%; 1990-2000 12.00%. Pop 2000: 91,436 (White 68.30%; Black or African American 25.10%; Hispanic or Latino 4.00%; Asian 1.00%; Other 4.00%). Foreign born: 3.40%. Median age: 34.40.
Income 2000: per capita $18,423; median household $35,966; Pop below poverty level: 13.10%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $25,856-$28,097.
Unemployment 2004: 5.10%. Change from 2000: -0.20%. Median travel time to work: 20.60 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 14.10%.
