(materials) Separation and contraction of the glaze on the surface of a ceramic object during drying or firing so that unglazed areas result. In a film of wet paint, redistribution of the paint so that it is no longer evenly spread, usually due to imperfect bonding of the paint with the surface. crawling 1. A defect in porcelain enamel, appearing as agglomerates or irregularly shaped “islands.” 2.
