Name Origin: For the Creek Nation, a loose confederation of southeastern tribes of Muskhogean linguistic stock. The name is from "Ochese Creek Indians." applied to them by settlers in what is now TN. They were probably the Yuchi. Area (sq mi): 969.77 (land 955.53; water 14.23). Pop per sq mi: 71.90. Pop 2005: 68,708. State rank: 9. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.00%; 1990-2000 10.60%. Pop 2000: 67,367 (White 81.40%; Black or African American 2.60%; Hispanic or Latino 1.90%; Asian 0.30%; Other 14.90%). Foreign born: 0.70%. Median age: 36.90.
