Crinum
a genus of bulbous plants of the family Amaryllidaceae. The bulbs have a long neck and may be up to 60–90 cm long and 25 cm in diameter. The leaves are sword-shaped or strapshaped, measuring up to 1.8 m in length. The flower-bearing shoot has an umbellate inflorescence of large white or pink flowers; the fruit is a capsule. The seeds are fleshy and large, containing enough water in the endosperm for them to germinate and form the bulb of a new plant without taking in outside moisture. There are approximately 100–110 (according to other data, as many as 150) Crinum species in the tropics and subtropics. They are especially common on seacoasts, river banks, lake shores, and soils that are flooded periodically. Many species are cultivated as ornamentals, the most widespread being C. asiaticum, C. giganteum, C. longifolium, C. moorei, and C X powellii. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
