On eastern border of AR, east of TN; organized Oct 22, 1825 (prior to statehood) from Phillips County. Name Origin: For Robert Crittenden, veteran of the War of 1812 and Arkansas Territory official.

    On southwestern border of KY, northeast of Paducah; organized Jan 26, 1842 from Livingston County. Name Origin: For John Jordan Crittenden (1787-1863), U.S. senator from KY (1817-19; 1835-41; 1842-48; 1855-61), governor (1848-50), and U.S. Attorney General (1841; 1850-53).
