Cromer, Evelyn Baring, First Earl of
Born Feb. 26, 1841, in Cromer Hall, Norfolk; died Jan. 29, 1917, in London. Lord; British colonial state figure. Cromer was Great Britain’s representative on the international commission on Egypt’s state debts (1877–80) and served as financial adviser to the viceroy of India (1880–83). As consul-general of Egypt (1883–1907) he virtually ran the country and secured British control over the Egyptian economy.
