In northeastern AR, west of Memphis, TN; organized Nov 15, 1862 from Crittenden, Poinsett, and Saint Francis counties. Name Origin: For Edward Cross (1798-1887), jurist and U.S. representative from AR (1839-45).

Area (sq mi): 622.33 (land 615.85; water 6.49). Pop per sq mi: 31.20.
Pop 2005: 19,237. State rank: 39. Pop change: 2000-20005 -1.50%; 1990-2000 1.60%. Pop 2000: 19,526 (White 74.40%; Black or African American 23.70%; Hispanic or Latino 0.90%; Asian 0.30%; Other 1.10%). Foreign born: 1.00%. Median age: 35.90.
