Cubberley, Ellwood Patterson

Cubberley, Ellwood Patterson, 1868–1941, American educator, b. Andrews, Ind., grad. Univ. of Indiana, 1891, Ph.D. Columbia, 1905. He was a pioneer writer in the history of American education and served as president (1891–96) of Vincennes Univ. and as superintendent of schools (1896–98) in San Diego, Calif. In 1898 he joined the faculty of Stanford, becoming professor of education in 1906 and in 1917 dean of the school of education, which he administered until his retirement in 1933. His works include Changing Conceptions in Education (1909), The History of Education (1920), Public School Administration (1929), and Public Education in the United States (rev. and enl. ed. 1947).

Cubberley, Ellwood Patterson (1868–1941) educator; born in Antioch, Ind. He was professor (1898–1933) and dean (1917–33) of the new school of education at Stanford. Cubberley's view of public schools as instruments of social engineering was controversial; but in more than 30 books he helped to make education an academic discipline and to professionalize public school teaching and administration.
