(mechanical engineering)
A synthetic material composed of boron and nitrogen (1:1) that is almost as hard as diamond, used as a superabrasive powder and for cutting and grinding applications.

The joint venture produces fused alumina (White Morundum) used as abrasives for wide applications and cubic boron nitride (SBN) for high-speed, high-precision grinding of automotive parts.
The balance that is provided by the adjustment is particularly important for boring at high speeds with polycrystalline diamond (PCD) or cubic boron nitride (CBN) tools, especially as this facilitates improved surface finish.
On this scale, diamond's hardness is around 100 gigapascals (GPa) of pressure, while cubic boron nitride has a hardness of 50 GPa.
