Ćubrilović, Vaso
Born Jan. 13, 1897, in Bosanska Gradiška. Yugoslav historian. Academician of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (1961). Ćubrilovič took part in the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, on June 28, 1914. For his participation in the plot, Ćubrilović was sentenced to 16 years in prison, but he was freed in 1918. In 1922 he graduated from the faculty of philosophy of the University of Belgrade, and in 1939 he became a professor there. During World War II he was in a concentration camp in Banica. From 1946 to 1967, Ćubrilović headed the department of modern national history at the University of Belgrade. In 1967 he became the director of the Institute of Balkan Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Ćubrilović is the author of works on the medieval and modern history of Bosnia, Hercegovina, Serbia, and Croatia. He was named a foreign member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1976.
