cucumber beetleAny of several leaf beetles (genus Diabrotica) that are important pests. They are greenish yellow, marked with black spots or stripes, and 0.1–0.5 in. (2.5–11 mm) long. | I've seen scorched-looking branches on plants in the pear family from fire blight, and excessive numbers of cucumber beetles have transported the disfiguring disease of mosaic to squashes. Even a small nibble provokes an intense gagging reflex and imparts an aftertaste that lingers for close to an hour--unless you're an adult corn rootworm, also known as a cucumber beetle. The cucumber beetle is an attractive relative of the ladybug, only its black-spotted wings are yellow or green, instead of orange or red in color. |
