cucumber beetleAny of several leaf beetles (genus Diabrotica) that are important pests. They are greenish yellow, marked with black spots or stripes, and 0.1–0.5 in. (2.5–11 mm) long. | I've seen scorched-looking branches on plants in the pear family from fire blight, and excessive numbers of cucumber beetles have transported the disfiguring disease of mosaic to squashes. Cabrera Walsh's experiments with taiuia indicate that this plant actually "draws cucumber beetles away from the corn--often from quite a distance. In fact, a mere 150 big brown bats can eat a sufficient number of cucumber beetles each summer to protect farmers from 18 million of their larvae (called root worms), which cost American farmers billions of dollars annually. |
