Cullom, Shelby M. (Moore) (1829–1914) U.S. representative/senator; born in Kentucky. A lawyer in Springfield, Ill., he became a Republican in 1858. He served Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives (1865–67), as governor (1877–83), and as U.S. senator (1883–1913). He helped establish the Interstate Commerce Commission in 1887.
