In north-central VA, northeast of Charlottesville; organized Mar 23, 1748 from Orange County. Name Origin: For Sir Thomas Culpeper (1635-89), colonial governor of VA. Also spelled Culpepper or Colepeper.

Area (sq mi): 382.28 (land 381.00; water 1.27). Pop per sq mi: 111.60.
Pop 2005: 42,530. State rank: 38. Pop change: 2000-20005 24.10%; 1990-2000 23.30%. Pop 2000: 34,262 (White 77.10%; Black or African American 18.20%; Hispanic or Latino 2.50%; Asian 0.70%; Other 2.80%). Foreign born: 3.50%. Median age: 36.50.
Income 2000: per capita $20,162; median household $45,290; Pop below poverty level: 9.20%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $26,360-$27,864.
