cultivarAny variety of a plant, originating through cloning or hybridization (see clone, hybrid), known only in cultivation. In asexually propagated plants, a cultivar is a clone considered valuable enough to have its own name; in sexually propagated plants, a cultivar is a pure line (for self-pollinated plants) or, for cross-pollinated plants, a population that is genetically distinguishable. Talk to people who have lived there for a decade or two and ask them which cultivars are the best producers. All these differences give rise to a variety of exotic names for the various cultivars such as Golden King, Silver Queen, Archer's Gold, Rainbow Falls, Pink Ripple, Goldstream, Lemon Curd, Silver Posie, and Highland Cream. Cultivars of this mounding, Mediterranean perennial can grow larger than four feet high and wide. |
