Cumbernauld, town (1991 pop. 47,517), near Glasgow, North Lanarkshire, SW Scotland. Cumbernauld, the 15th of Britain's new towns new towns, planned urban communities in Great Britain, developed by long-term loans from the central government and first authorized by the New Towns Act of 1946.

, was designated in 1955 to alleviate Glasgow's growth problems. Cumbernauld's industries include food processing and the manufacture of adding machines and adhesive products. It was the first new town in which automobile traffic was adequately anticipated and provided for. Wherever possible, vehicular roads were completely separated from pedestrian ways.
