Curran, Charles E. (Edward) (1934– ) Catholic theologian; born in Rochester, N.Y. After being ordained and earning advanced degrees in Rome, he taught at a diocesan seminary (1962–65), counseling couples on the side. He then taught at Catholic University (Washington, D.C.), also writing on moral theology. His increasingly liberal views on sexual morality caused controversy, especially after a 1968 encyclical condemning birth control. In 1979 the Vatican began investigating him; in 1986 he was barred from teaching at Catholic University. How to thank TFD for its existence?
