Cuthbert, Saint (kŭth`bərt), c.A.D. 635–A.D. 687, Celtic monk, bishop at Lindisfarne (685–86). He spent some time in the monastery at Ripon. When St. Wilfrid Wilfrid, Saint, 634–709?, English churchman, b. Northumbria, of noble parentage. He was educated at Lindisfarne and Canterbury. With Benedict Biscop he traveled to Lyons and Rome in 654; Wilfrid remained to study in each city.

Cuthbert preached for some years in his native Scotland, especially to the Picts of Galloway. He became prior at Lindisfarne (see Holy Island Holy Island or Lindisfarne (lĭn`dĭsfärn), off the coast of Northumberland, NE England.

With great reluctance, he accepted (685) the bishopric of Bernicia at Lindisfarne, retiring to Farne for his last weeks. His relics were taken to Durham later. Feast: Mar. 20.

Cuthbert, Saint

(born 634/635, probably Northumbria, Eng.—died March 20, 687, islet of Inner Farne, or House, off Northumbria; feast day March 20) English saint. A shepherd, Cuthbert entered the Northumbrian monastery of Melrose in 651 after receiving a divine vision. When plague struck 10 years later, he aided the afflicted, reportedly performing miracles. In 664 he became prior of Lindisfarne, where he instituted a severe rule. In 676 he retired to Inner Farne, where he devoted himself to prayer. His efforts to protect birds made him one of the earliest wildlife conservationists.
