Cysticercoid
a larval stage of tapeworms. The body is divided into truncal and caudal segments. The head, which bears suckers, is retracted within the truncal segment; the tail has three pairs of hooks. The cysticercoid is parasitic in the body cavity of its intermediate host, which may be an annelid worm, crustacean, insect, mollusk, or vertebrate animal. After being ingested by its definitive host, a vertebrate animal, it casts off the caudal segment and becomes an adult tapeworm. The cysticercoid is a characteristic stage of the dog tapeworm (Dipylidium caninum), which as an adult is parasitic in the intestines of dogs and cats. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
