Czuczor, Gergely (gĕr`gĕlĭ ts `tsôr), 1800–1866, Hungarian philologist and poet, a Benedictine monk. With John Fogarasi he compiled a Hungarian dictionary (completed 1861). He also wrote folk poetry and popular epics. Czuczor was imprisoned (1849–51) for his poem The Alarm (1848), which called Hungary to violent revolt against Austrian rule. |
