a department in eastern Champagne, northeastern France. Area, 6,300 sq km. Population, 218,000 (1973). Administrative center, Chaumont. Cattle, sheep, swine, and Ardennes horses are raised; the agricultural products are grains, fodder crops, and fruit. Lumbering and machine construction are the main industries.
