D3 (Digital 3) A 1/2" broadcast-quality composite digital videotape format designed for recording uncompressed digital versions of analog NTSC or PAL. D3 VTRs sample composite video at four times their subcarrier frequency (4FSC). Similar in purpose to D2 equipment, D3's half-inch format lent itself to more applications. See D2 and D1.
