DTS

(1) (Digital Theatre Sound) A digital audio encoding system used in movie and home theaters. Popularized by the movie Jurassic Park, the six-channel (5.1) soundtrack is maintained on CD-ROMs that are synchronized with the DTS timecode in the film, making it compatible with existing theater systems. The conventional stereo optical audio track is still retained on the film for backup. DTS 70mm provides DTS for theaters with 70mm projection systems.

For Home Theaters
DTS Digital Surround is the home theater counterpart, and many late-model DVD players support DTS 5.1 and DTS ES (Extended Surround) 6.1 channel formats.

DTS-HD offers two optional formats for Blu-ray movies. DTS-HD High Resolution Audio supports 7.1 channels, and DTS-HD Master Audio supports any number of surround channels that are downmixed to stereo or 5.1 channels. When played on DTS equipment that does not support the Master Audio format, the normally lossless DTS data becomes lossy.

DTS is the least compressed digital audio format, and many claim it to be the best quality. See lossless, Dolby Digital, SDDS and THX.

(2) (Digital Termination Service) A microwave-based, line-of-sight communications provided directly to the end user.

(3) (DeskTop Server) An earlier Motorola 68000-based network server from Banyan.

(4) (Developer Technical Support) The tech-support group for developers at Apple.
