Dade, Francis Langhorne (?1793–1835) soldier; born in King George County, Va. A career officer, he received an infantry commission in 1813. A force of Seminoles and blacks surprised and nearly annihilated his 115-man force in Florida on December 28, 1835. Dade fell dead in the first volley, and only three of his soldiers survived to tell the story of the "Dade Massacre." Florida would later name a county after him. How to thank TFD for its existence?
