Dagestan, University of
(full name. V. I. Lenin University of Dagestan), founded in 1957 in Makhachkala from the S. Stal’skii Dagestan Pedagogical Institute. In 1971 the university had 11 departments (philology, foreign languages, mathematics, physics, history, biology, radio engineering, chemistry, engineering, engineering-construction, and economics), evening and correspondence divisions, a graduate school, 40 subdepartments, a research institute for the folklore and literature of Dagestan, a computer laboratory, a planetarium, a biological museum, a museum of the history of Dagestan, and a botanical garden. The university library has over 500.000 volumes. During the 1970–71 academic year more than 8,000 students studied at the university, and there were approximately 500 instructors, including 25 professors and doctors of science and 193 assistant professors and candidates of science.
