 in 1723, Dahl enjoyed an enormous popularity, painting Queen Anne and members of the aristocracy. Beyond a surface artificiality, Dahl's work reflects a considerable humanity. His paintings are to be seen in the National Portrait Gallery, London (e.g., Self-Portrait, 1691), and in Windsor Castle.
