Dale, Richard

Dale, Richard (1756–1826) naval officer; born in Norfolk County, Va. After an adventurous career at sea, including two imprisonments by the British, he served as first lieutenant under John Paul Jones on the Bonhomme Richard in the battle with the Serapis (1779). After 1783 he alternated between merchant ships and the U.S. Navy, commanding the squadron that blockaded Tripoli (1801–02), then retired to a quiet life in Philadelphia.
