In southeastern AL, northwest of Dothan; organized Dec 22, 1824 from Covington and Henry counties. Name Origin: For Samuel Dale (1772-1841), officer and scout in the Indian wars, and legislator in AL and MS.

Area (sq mi): 562.67 (land 561.07; water 1.60). Pop per sq mi: 86.90.
Pop 2005: 48,748. State rank: 26. Pop change: 2000-20005 -0.80%; 1990-2000 -1.00%. Pop 2000: 49,129 (White 72.80%; Black or African American 20.40%; Hispanic or Latino 3.30%; Asian 1.10%; Other 4.10%). Foreign born: 3.10%. Median age: 34.30.
