Dalecarlia Uprisings

    0.01 sec.
Dalecarlia Uprisings

popular uprisings in the Swedish district of Dalarna (or Dalecarlia). The first was from 1524 to 1525, the second from 1527 to 1528, and the third from 1531 to 1532. The last was also known as the bell uprising, since its immediate cause was the removal of church bells to cover the state debt. The uprisings stemmed from the increasing tax burden in the reign of Gustavus I Vasa, the destruction of foreign trade, high prices, and the intrigues of opposition groups of the aristocracy and Catholic prelates, who were hostile to the centralizing policy of the king and to his Reformation policy. The king suppressed the Dalecarlia uprisings and had their leaders executed.
