Dallas, George (Mifflin) (1792–1864) vice-president, U.S. senator; born in Philadelphia. He came from a wealthy Philadelphia family. A Jacksonian Democrat, he was mayor of Philadelphia and a senator before winning the vice-presidency in 1844 under James Polk. He promoted the view that a vice-president should always support his administration's policies, regardless of his own political beliefs.
