Dalyell or Dalzell, Thomas (both: dēĕl`, dăl`yəl), 1599?–1685, Scottish soldier; also called Dalziel of the Binns. He fought for Charles II at the battle of Worcester (1651), was captured, escaped, and took service in Russia. Returning to Scotland after the Restoration (1660), he became commander of the forces charged with suppressing the Covenanters Covenanters , in Scottish history, groups of Presbyterians bound by oath to sustain each other in the defense of their religion.
