Darclée, Hariclea 

(pseudonym of H. Haricly-Hartulary). Born June 10, 1860. in Bràila; died Jan. 10, 1939, in Bucharest. Rumanian opera singer (lyric-dramatic soprano). One of the founders of the Rumanian school of singing.

Darclée received her musical training in Vienna. In Paris she studied with E. Duvernois. She made her debut in 1888 at the Grand Opera in Paris, singing the part of Marguérite in Faust by Gounod. She possessed a voice of extensive range (over three octaves), subtle musical feeling, and perfect vocal technique. Her acting was highly dramatic and powerfully expressive. She performed successfully on the stages of the leading opera houses of France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, USA, Argentina, and other countries. In 1889, 1893, and 1897 she toured Russia (Moscow and St. Petersburg). Darclée was the first performer to sing the title parts in the operas Iris by Mascagni (1898) and Tosca by Puccini (1900).
