On the central eastern shore of NC on Pamlico Sound, east of Greenville; organized Feb 2, 1870 from Tyrrell, Hyde, and Currituck counties. Name Origin: For Virginia Dare, born (Aug 18, 1587) on Roanoke Island in the county, the first child of English parents to be born in the Americas
