Darienko, Petr Stepanovich
Born Apr. 16. 1923, in the village of Dolinskoe, present-day Anan’ev Raion, Odessa Oblast. Soviet Moldavian poet and publicist. Member of the CPSU since 1943. Darienko is the author of poetry collections, including Songs of a Soviet Spring (1948), Poems (1954), Man’s Footsteps (1964), and Hours of Meditation (1966). The heroism of the Soviet people during the war, the struggle for peace, and constructive labor are the basic themes of his lyric poetry, which is associated to a high degree with the oral folk tradition. Darienko is also a playwright (When the Grapes Ripen, 1961). From 1963 to 1967, Darienko was minister of culture of the Moldavian SSR, and in 1968 he became editor in chief of the newspaper Sovetskaia kultura.
