Darnton, Robert (Choate) (1939–  ) historian; born in New York City. Educated at Harvard and Oxford (D.Phil. 1964), he began as a reporter for the New York Times in New York and England before commencing a teaching career at Harvard (1965–68) and Princeton (1968). His interest in the social history of ideas resulted in a series of studies of books, authors, and public opinion in pre-Revolutionary France, including The Great Cat Massacre and Other Episodes in French Cultural History (1984).
