Daskalov, Khristo Stefanov 

Born Feb. 18. 1903, in the village of Vuglevtsi, Turnovo District. Bulgarian horticulturist. Academician of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1952); member of the Lenin Ail-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences (1967). Member of the Bulgarian Communist Party since 1947; Hero of Socialist Labor of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria (1963).

In 1926, Daskalov graduated from the University of Halle; he did work in his specialty in Sweden and Germany. He was the director of the Maritsa Research Institute in Plovdiv from 1932 to 1946 and a professor in the department of agronomy of the University of Plovdiv from 1946 to 1952. He became the director of the Horticultural Institute (since 1967, the Institute of Plant Genetics and Selection) of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in 1952. He was president of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria from 1966 to 1971. Daskalov’s main works are devoted to the problems of heterotic phenomena of cultivated crops and interspecies hybridization. He has produced about 30 new varieties of vegetables. He was awarded the Dimitrov Prize in 1950.
