data transfer

(1) Copying data from a storage device to memory.

(2) Copying data from one computer to another. When a network is used, data are technically "transmitted" over the network, rather than transferred; however, the terms transfer and transmit are used synonymously.

The technique used by the hardware manufacturer to transmit data from computer to storage device or from storage device to computer; usually under specialized program control.
