Doha (dō`hä), city (1994 est. pop. 361,500), capital of Qatar, SE Arabia, on the Persian Gulf. Doha was a small fishing and pearling village until oil production in Qatar began in 1949. Since then it has become a modern city, with a deepwater port and an international airport. Fishing is still an important industry.

City (pop., 1997: 264,009), capital of Qatar. Located on the east coast of the Qatar Peninsula, it contains about three-fifths of the country's population. Long a centre of pirate activity in the Persian Gulf, Doha was a small village when it became the capital of newly independent Qatar in 1971. The city has been thoroughly modernized. Its Government House (1969) was built on reclaimed waterfront land; its water supply is obtained by distilling seawater. The deepwater port, built in the 1970s, accommodates oceangoing vessels.

Doha 

a city; capital of the state of Qatar. Population, 65,000 (1969). It is a port on the Persian Gulf, on the eastern shore of the Qatar Peninsula. It is an important trade center. The city has metalworking industry, as well as fishing and pearl diving. There are two steam power plants. Pearls, fish, and dates are exported. There is an international airport. A cement plant is located near Doha.
